Comparison of New Zealand SME Initiatives (2007)

This research examines the scope, delivery mechanisms and targeting practices of New Zealand SME Government initiatives. It looks at the range of support initiatives that exist, the methods such initiatives use to successfully engage SMEs and the variety of techniques deployed to deliver such initiatives.


Human Resource Practices (2006)

This project is part of BusinesSMEasure and focused on the way SMEs deal with HRM issues.


Telling Tales (2006)

This project is part of BusinesSMEasure and explores SMEs and their relationship with banks and accountants.


Family, Friends & Government Agencies (2005)

This project is part of BusinesSMEasure and focused on SMEs and their support infrastructure.


Clusters & regional development (2005)

This project was undertaken for the Ministry of Economic Development and was designed to provide a profile of business clusters existing in New Zealand and to investigate the role clusters play in other countries.


Micro by name, medium by nature (2005)

This project is part of BusinesSMEasure and focused on the way in which SME owners perceive business excellence.


Workplace Health & Safety in Relation to Productivity (2005)

This project was undertaken for the Department of Labour. The objective was to investigate the relationship between OSH practices and productivity in New Zealand firms.


Championz business game (2004)

An evaluation of the Championz business game was undertaken for the Small Business Company, with the assistance of New Zealand Trade & Enterprise.


Managerial Capability (2004)

This project was undertaken for the Ministry of Economic Development as a foundation for a significant work programme on developing managerial capability in New Zealand SMEs.


Managerial Capability (2004)

This project was undertaken for the Ministry of Economic Development and was a significant piece of empirical research on the development of managerial capability in New Zealand firms. It examined the supply of and demand for initiatives that help business people to develop management capability.


Stories of growth (2004)

This project is part of BusinesSMEasure and focused the lifecycles and transitions of New Zealand firms.


Workplace Productivity (2004)

This project was undertaken for the Department of Labour and was a series of case studies on productivity in New Zealand firms. It focused on how firms think through issues concerned with workplace productivity and excellent business practice.


Best Practice Local Economic Development (2003)

This project was undertaken for Industry New Zealand in preparation for its merger with Trade New Zealand, and included an international review of business assistance programmes and an assessment of current best practice in the delivery of these programmes.


Enterprise Culture (2003)

This project was undertaken for the Ministry of Economic Development as a contribution to the government’s commitment to the establishment of a ‘culture or enterprise’ in New Zealand.


The Business Portal (2003)

This project was undertaken for Industry New Zealand as it prepared to merge with Trade New Zealand. The Business Portal offers a first point of contact to New Zealand’s small and medium enterprises and the New Zealand Centre for SME Research was contracted to provide academic leadership and quality assurance to the project.


Evaluation of Venture Capital Game (2003)

This project was carried out for The Small Business Company, as they completed the first stage of establishing the Venture Capital Game, one of the projects funded by Industry New Zealand under the Enterprise Skills and Capabilities Fund.


Self-employment of Women (2003)

This project was undertaken for the National Advisory Council for the Employment of Women as the first stage in a three-year project focusing on the needs of self-employed women in New Zealand.


The Impact of Business Compliance (2003)

This project was undertaken for the Ministry of Economic Development as a follow-up to the work of the Ministerial Panel on Business Compliance Costs.


Cases in Enterprising Museums (2002)

This project was undertaken on behalf of Te Papa National Services as a follow-up to the 2001 research on revenue sources for museums and art galleries, with a focus on those that were small and medium in size.


Women & Micro-finance (2002)

This project was commissioned by the l("http://www.mwa.govt.nz", "Ministry of Women’s Affairs"), which wanted a review of the literature and current practice on micro-finance and women in New Zealand.


Compliance Costs Perceptions (2002)

This project was completed for the Ministry of Economic Development as a follow-up to the work undertaken in 2001 for the Ministerial Panel on Business Compliance Costs.


Working Smarter in Tourism SMEs (2002)

This project was commissioned by the Tourism Industry Association of New Zealand, as part of a strategy to develop the performance of firms within the sector. This project was undertaken in partnership with The Small Business Company.


Young Enterprise (2002)

This project was a follow-up to the first evaluation of the Young Enterprise Scheme undertaken in 2001. Phase 1 of this project was the establishment of a database and website for alumni of the Young Enterprise programme. Phase 2, which was completed in 2003 was an evaluation of the influence of Young Enterprise on the attitudes of participants, in relation to a number of dimensions, including employability, job creation and enterprise start-up


Best Practice & Performance Survey (2002)

This project was part of a major piece of work being undertaken by the Ministry of Economic Development on business practice in New Zealand firms. The study was published as Firm Foundations


E-Commerce evaluation (2001)

This project was undertaken for Industry New Zealand and was designed to assess the effectiveness of the E-Commerce series of seminars that is a 'flagship' programme for what was then known as the BIZ training programme


Income Sources in New Zealand Museums and Art Galleries (2001)

This project was completed for Te Papa National Services, and investigated the wide variety of initiatives being undertaken by New Zealand museums and art galleries to generate revenue.


Economic Development Agency Capacity Improvement (2001)

This project was completed for Industry New Zealand to assist them to improve the capability of BIZ provider organisations to identify and develop competencies in the organisations they assist.


Small business assistance directory (2001)

This project involved the preparation of a directory of all the forms of assistance for small businesses in New Zealand. It was the 2nd edition of a publication that was initially sponsored by the ANZ bank.


US Manufacturing Extension Programme (2000)

This project was undertaken on behalf of the l("http://www.nist.gov","National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)") which wanted to examine the way in which New Zealand was introducing the consultancy model into the delivery of business development programmes. A paper was prepared and delivered at the annual meeting of the Programme Directors of the Manufacturing Extension Programme.


BIZ Evaluation (2000)

This project was an independent evaluation of the BIZ programme which was commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Development and undertaken in conjunction with BERL and the National Research Bureau.
