The Postgraduate Diploma in Emergency Management is for students who want to broaden their knowledge of disaster prevention and management.
Emergency management focuses on organising communities to respond to disasters, survive them, rebuild social structures and infrastructure, and sustain and preserve life.
Massey’s Postgraduate Diploma in Emergency Management will give you a range of knowledge about theory and research in emergency management. It covers emergency management issues, practices and policies.
If you’re a mid-to-senior level emergency manager, and are interested in expanding your emergency management competencies, this diploma is for you. It’s an advanced coursework degree that builds on the core emergency management knowledge you’ve gained through industry experience and prerequisite qualifications. You’ll build advanced knowledge of emergency management at both operational and strategic levels.
You’ll work closely with professionals at the Joint Centre for Disaster Research, an exciting collaboration between Massey University and GNS Science, based at Massey’s Wellington campus.
“Massey stood apart from other tertiary providers for its high-quality lecturers and teaching…”
I became passionate about emergency management in the wake of the Rena oil spill. The CV Rena was carrying 1733 tonnes of heavy fuel oil and 1368 containers when it ran aground on Astrolabe Reef, off the Bay of Plenty, in 2011. I spent the summer of 2011 to 2012 as a wildlife responder for Maritime NZ, cleaning large amounts of oil off the rocks around the penguin burrows at Mount Maunganui. I walked up and down Bay of Plenty coastlines picking up dead birds, and was involved in monitoring little blue penguins.
I decided to study emergency management at Massey because it stood apart from other tertiary providers for its high-quality lecturers and teaching. My lecturers were motivating and encouraging, only wanting the best for their students. Massey motivates, encourages and builds students up. You learn that through hard work you can achieve anything.
In my employment as an Immigration Support Officer, I am also a representative on the Health and Safety Committee. The knowledge I gained from my Massey study has been beneficial, giving me a good understanding of emergency management in different possible scenarios. I want to continue to grow, keep learning, gain knowledge and to make a positive difference in the world I live in.
