International and domestic students pay the same PhD tuition fee. Students need to be based in New Zealand for the duration of their candidacy. The maximum time that can be spent off shore across the candidacy for international students is a cumulative 12 months. All PhDs are classified as internal, there are no distance PhDs.
Full time students pay full-time fees until they submit their thesis for examination. Part-time students pay part-time fees until they submit for examination.
The billing cycle for fees is calendar years, not start dates. Each year you will receive an invoice for that year's fees. Full time students receive an invoice each year for four years, and part-time students each year for six years, with pro rata fees.
If a student submits for examination early, they will receive a credit for the difference. For example, a student with an expected submission date of July submits in April. They will get a refund for the three months, May, June and July.
For more information about how fees are being managed through the new Student Management System, please refer to the following document ( Important Fee Information for Doctoral Students (180 KB) ).
Students who withdraw from study will receive a credit. The credit is the difference between the period they have paid up to and the date they have withdrawn.
All University fees are payable immediately upon the University issuing a Confirmation of Enrolment and before the start of study, or earlier if required by the University and specified in an Offer of Place.
Doctoral scholarships are offered to encourage full time doctoral studies at Massey University. The scholarships are open to domestic and international students.
Applicants require an excellent academic record and must be enrolled or eligible to enrol in a 120 credit doctoral research paper.
