‘Smart cities’ have been presented as leading edge of urban, and increasingly rural, management. This seminar provides a brief overview of developments in ‘Smart Cities’ before turning to ask what is the problem with cities that requires ‘Smart Cities’ as the solution. Drawing on the surveillance capitalism literature I suggest that a closer look at surveillance as an accumulation strategy leads us to more critical understanding of the possibilities and perils of ‘Smart Cities’.
