We recommend all postgraduate and undergraduate students attend semester one orientation. There will be lots of events and workshops at our Manawatū campus.

Select a day from the list below to find out about the activities scheduled.

Sunday 16 February


Halls check-in

Check into your hall of residence before being guided around your new home. Residential Assistants (RAs) will be your tour guides, and available to answer any questions you may have.

Parents meet and greet

Parents and whanau, come along and meet the Student Life Services staff. Refreshments will be provided.

New Māori/VetMAP Student Pōhiri

Traditional Māori welcome for all new Māori/VetMAP students and their whanau to Massey and Manawatū. This is a formal way to acknowledge and foster new relationships. Manuhiri (visitors) will be welcomed on to the campus marae by our hosts (tangata whenua) at Te Pūtahi-ā-Toi, School of Māori Knowledge.

Afternoon tea/Kai timotimo Accommodation check in for non-hall students/whanau

For new Māori/VetMAP students. Have a kai, a break and check in (if you're sleeping in the Te Pūtahi marae).

Whakawhanaungatanga activities

For new Māori/VetMAP students. Let’s get to know each other. Introduce yourself in whatever way suits you. Be brave and say your mihimihi/pepeha, use any Te Reo or Pacific language you know or speak in English. This is a safe place to practice, pronounce things wrong, and get out of our comfort zone.  Afterwards, join in some fun games and icebreaker activities to get everyone mingling.

Parents/whanau Uni life talk

Info for parents and whanau of Māori and VetMAP students. Come and learn what your son or daughter is in for, and how you can best support them succeed at Uni.

Māori and VetMAP student's BBQ Dinner

BBQ dinner for Māori and VetMAP students and their parents and whanau.  Vegetarian and gluten free options.

Halls backyard BBQ

The start of year BBQ is held on Concourse with music, games and some sweet treats. This gives you a chance to chill out after a big day moving into the halls plus lets you meet some fellow residents.

Marae accommodation settle in for non hall students/whanau

For new Māori/VetMAP students. For those staying at the marae, find your mattress and choose your spot to sleep in the wharenui. Whanau are welcome to stay (Registration required. First in, first served).

Mihi Whakatau

Traditional Māori welcome for students and their families to the campus and city. The mihi whakatau brings together hosts (tangata whenua) and visitors (manuhiri) in a welcoming environment of friendship and generosity. Refreshments provided.

Inflatable world

We are halfway through the week and you don’t want to miss this one!  Test your ninja skills on our huge inflatable obstacle course and other activities!  DFresh will be cranking out the sounds, and we will have a free BBQ going. We’ve got a stack of grocery vouchers for the best dressed and an ever bigger stack of music for your good times. Palmy bus tour

The Massey Guides will show you the ‘ins and outs’ of Palmy, including local markets and The Esplanade. There will be a stop at our local mall – The Plaza - to purchase any necessities you may need (there is also a supermarket onsite). Please note: This is a first on the bus until full tour.

Volleyball competition – Halls

Challenge other halls on the courts. We’ll have some awesome prizes to give out to the victors and a BBQ too. Register your interest with your Residential Assistant (RA) and be sure to head along with your Hall friends for an afternoon of fun. Please note: participants for this event must be a Hall resident. Spectators are welcome from all over the University.

Rat out your hair and break out the leg warmers, we are going back to the 80's! Nibbles and non-alcoholic drinks will be provided. Prize for best 80's getup!

What to say? Toga. Party. Ok we done. See you there. For real though, there’s no party like a toga party, and FutureFest goes out with the best! We’ve assembled a line-up of bands so on point you’d be lucky to see them anywhere on earth. Mako Road, Daffodils and Being have been jamming bodies into Wheres around the country for all of 2019, so make sure you start your 2020 at MU the right way. Its toga time.
